The Ragdoll is known for her soft, silky coat — absolutely perfect for cuddles. Although her semi-long fur looks lush and full, it’s surprisingly low-maintenance. With a bit of love and care, your Ragdoll will not only stay beautiful but grooming can become a lovely moment of bonding.
Weekly Grooming
Brushing once or twice a week is usually enough. Use an (anti-static) comb and pay extra attention to sensitive spots like under the armpits, behind the ears, and around the “pantaloons”. Regular brushing helps prevent tangles and keeps your cat’s coat healthy and shiny. For trickier areas, you can also use a slicker brush.
Shedding Seasons
In spring and autumn, when the coat renews itself, brushing is especially helpful. It helps prevent hairballs and keeps your Ragdoll feeling fresh and comfortable.
Bathing: Yes or No?
Regular bathing isn’t necessary, but it can be useful in some situations — for example, with show cats, when the coat becomes oily, or to remove loose fur. All of our kittens are lovingly bathed at least once before they leave us, so they’re already familiar with a gentle wash.
We always use a mild, cat-specific shampoo that respects the natural oils of the skin. After bathing, the coat is carefully dried and brushed. If you’d like to bathe your Ragdoll at home, do it calmly, patiently, and always follow up with cuddles and praise.
Grooming is more than maintenance — it’s quality time. While you gently brush or dry your cat, your bond deepens. Many Ragdolls truly enjoy the personal attention and will relax, sometimes even purring with delight.
Tips for a Shiny Coat:
- Always use soft brushes or combs that don’t damage the fur.
- Detangle small knots with your fingers before brushing.
- While grooming, also check nails, ears, and teeth.
- Keep grooming sessions short and positive, especially for younger cats.
- Use baby powder or cat-specific talc to easily comb the hind legs and bottom tangle-free.
- End each session with a pet, cuddle, or treat — this keeps grooming a joyful experience.
